*whew* I had to let a break out on this one. My heart, I don’t know how to even begin to talk about this book with you.
There were so many things that will break a person, it’s Stockholm Syndrome there is no doubt about that. Vesper Lived a relatively normal life with her mother and step Dad, her brother Johnny had a few handicaps and she took care of him. Her life was the same ins and outs with no break in sight.
Good girls watch their brothers, go to school and become a nurse. Marry the boy who you have been in love with since high school. He becomes a doctor and you pop out a few kids in your suburban neighborhood with the white picket fence and Golden retriever.
Her boyfriend Carver proposes, and she of course said yes. There was no option B, right? The night was supposed to be perfect; things were going the way they should. Until the Night, until HIM.
Sam, there is something wrong with me, I watch them in their pretty, perfect lives, living in their pretty perfect world. I stalk them, I learn them, then I take them.
“A house provides the facade of protection. It’s a sacred place, separating you from the beasts that lurk outside. But that’s all it is: a facade. The reason your home is safe is because no one has wanted in yet. But if you are so unlucky, nothing can stop a monster from breaching those walls”
Sam wants what he can’t have, a desire that burns through him. His life was messed up over and over again. I know I shouldn’t root for the bad guy and he had done somethings that I fully against. But in a way it made my heart ache. HE made my heart ache.
Vesper, You know I had to give it up to Vesp in the end, this chick was strong. To go what she went through and come out the other end the way she did. I say go girl.
“I thought being loved was the most gratifying feeling. No, it’s being obsessed over. It’s having someone so infatuated with you that they would risk everything to have you. That is a high that love can’t touch. Love is a slow burn, a stockpot simmering to soften the heart. But this—this is a flash flood, it’s the smoke billowing when a steak hits a hot pan. It’s threatening, but its fierceness is the very thing love dilutes.”
The two of them together, I have no words. Again, I shouldn’t root for them, but I did. I wont even begin to lie. Nina Jones took my morals by the hand and walked them into the shed and locked them up. How she managed to do that I have no idea. She made me love the bad man. She told me it was okay while she cuddled me with depravity and chuckled while a swooned.
“You don’t stare the devil in the eyes and come out without some of his sin. You can’t beat the devil without becoming like him. You can’t appeal to his kindness, so you have to learn to play his games. You lie, you fuck, you manipulate, you fight, you hurl insults, until you do whatever it takes to win the battle. Every time you do those things, you understand him a little more. Until finally, he becomes your ally. You think you’ve won, that you’ve made him more like you. But the truth is, it’s the other way around. So that even when you win, you’ve lost.”
It was a dark romance, it made you believe that in the end love conquers all. That Obsession is key and that your heart can skip a beat for the bad man.
“Shhhh,” he whispers, stroking my head. “No one loves you like I do.”
In the end hand onto my Morals for a little longer Nina I just got another book from you and I am devouring it as we speak. I will call you when I need them back but don’t hold your breath.
This is going on my ‘is going to by in paperback” list.
